The game in itself is unusual and parochial. You can tell by the name – Australian Rules. You just know its not going to have an international following and we aren’t as self-absorbed as the Americans as to concoct a World Series when it could only ever be us Vs the world and the world can’t, and wouldn’t, want to play. We play the Irish though. But they don’t play Australian Rules (or Aussie rules as we call it, in our nasal and kinda breathless way), they play Gaelic Football. We shi...

Bjork would not have won Idol! I have recently been listening to Bjork and falling in love all over again. I typed live instead of love in that last sentence and I think there is something to it. I have been without music for the last year of so, not because I lack the means but because I lacked the interest. Recently the interest was reignited and I found myself alive again. Virgins realise how they have not yet been born into the world until that first touch and priests understand the...

There is some small consolation in words when the times move in a quick succession of bloody acts, not words, just the silent sucking of air and the soul sucking rip of an explosion, each bomb blast with an eye, just like a storm, gathering itself inward, we breathe the fuel that kills us, and then a quickly expanding pupil of tree stump buildings and wretched, dead humanity. Some say that blood tastes like copper, and explosives too have a taste, plastic, almost domestic, death grows more po...

I hate to think it, but the fate of our world rests in the hands of men and women who along with fate, hold in their hands guns and weapons. If not holding them directly, than ordering those hands, telling them when and who to strike down. Fundamentalists on the other side of the world are hard to reach at best, impossible at worst. I have no written or conversational Arabic, and the Muslims that I do know are not complicit in the appalling trade in blood we see paraded before us day in an...

Jesus H Christ. And I thought I was joking about an international organisation monitoring the American presidential elections , but obviously not. Link It seems that after 12 Democratic House members wrote to Kofi Annan, to ask the UN to monitor the 2004 election after what they deemed to be a stolen 2000 election, President Bush appeared to bow to pressure, but with the exception of turning to the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) instead. There has been outr...

This is an article which i found at Link I think it's an interesting piece of satire and like all satire its effectiveness is directly related to its proximity to the truth. Even though the situation it depicts might not be veracious, it could be. That's the point. It's sad to think that things have gotten this bad, this rotten, when our "light on the hill" (i.e. America) is so openly and validly called into question. Enough with my blabbing, here's the article for you all to enjoy (and...

The Greens today announced that their policies would include the decriminalisation of drugs (not all, mostly that happy pill we call “e” and cannabis), an obscure push to get us out of cars and onto bikes, another hazy initiative to get us eating the Green’s beloved vegetables rather than meat, covering gender reassignment under Medicare, and, perhaps most outrageously of all, an increase in stamp duty and taxes for home buyers. These are the statements of a noble and courageous creature. ...

Let me paint a picture. A small solar system with nought but a sun, its gravitational field and a comet. A comet has three (four, technically) distinct features - a nucleus, a coma and a tail. It orbits in wide ellipses around a sun. Sometimes out at the furthest reaches, away from the fiery centre, cold and invisible, but always edging closer. As it nears the sun its pace quickens. The famed sling shot effect of a travelling, celestial body being “flung” by a larger body and its ...

Death is an exclusively individual experience, but the only remains, other than the carcass, are the memories and emotions (or lack thereof) of the people you leave behind. Along with all this comes their judgement. Unusually cruel, seeing as the recipient of said judgement isn’t present at their own hearing. So is it true? Do we die for others? In asking that – do we die for others? – I am not asking whether death itself exists for the benefit or detriment of anyone else other than th...

There are some very simple rules that you can follow while involved in an argument to keep the whole affair surgical, precise and as mess free as possible. Sometimes we don’t want surgical, precise or mess free. We want the mess and the spittle; the War of the Roses wages with our tongues, casualty list inclusive, with a crater blasted front and no hope of retreat. I understand this desire and I understand what motivates it. We can’t all be serial killers and sometimes, when life is a l...

I have only recently noticed that Mignuna is sitting high and on the right hand side of the JU throne. She is second in ranking. That's right. Second! I was both overjoyed and astonished that such a thing has happened. Firstly, I was overjoyed as Mig is a close and dear friend of mine. The closest and dearest friend i have. Seeing as i am a misanthropist at best and just plain nasty at best, this is an achievement that stands irrespective of whatever else she accomplishes (don't under...
